Visual Art in the Housing Estates of Brno (1945–1989)
Kořínková, Jana ; Bartlová, Milena (referee) ; Hrůša, Petr (referee) ; Chamonikolasová, Kaliopi (advisor)
With special attention being paid to the development in the city of Brno, the dissertation focuses on the issue of applying artworks in Czechoslovak architecture after World War II. The main research questions – Why were in Czechoslovakia after 1945 artworks again integrated in architecture and what strategies were applied in the case of the newly built housing estates in the city of Brno? – are answered in two successive sections. First, the institutional background for application of art in architecture in the light of the events in Brno (1945–1993) is examined; the closing part is devoted to three case studies that illustrate local development in the period of socialist realism, creative release of the1960s and political normalization. The aim is to highlight the complexity of the examined subject and refute a popularly handed down conviction that integration of artworks into architecture in the period of socialism was motivated exclusively by the communist propaganda, and to show that the attempts to create a synthesis of art and architecture were also based both on earlier theoretical considerations about the educational function of art and its effect on humans and the need to improve poor economic situation of artists after World War II.
Samizdat Journal Obsah Published in the Years 1981-1985
ŠTOLFA, Daniel
This bachelor's thesis deals with the analysis of individual issues of the samizdat magazine Obsah, which was published between 1981 and 1989, but the thesis focuses only on the 1981-1985 editions, as the following editions reflected the political and social situation and focused on the reflection of political events. The analysis is set in the context of the normalisation period and reflects the periodical's contemporary language also in terms of its engagement with the political and cultural events of the time. It assesses the role the periodical played in the context of the totalitarian regime and how it contributed to the development of a parallel cultural space. The aim of this analysis is to reflect on the intent and purpose of the published texts, the change in the form of the journal or the shift of the periodical, or what themes were present in the contributions. The thesis then presents a picture of the periodical as the activity of a group of writers in an unauthorized artistic space and the situation of this creative activity. At the same time, the thesis attempts to portray the different areas that the articles covered and what thematic and genre range they covered.

Normalisation algorithms for spatially resolved transcriptomic data
Nádvorníková, Bára ; Kolář, Michal (advisor) ; Abaffy, Pavel (referee)
Spatially resolved transcriptomics is a novel method that enables the study of gene expression in tissue samples without loss of spatial context. It can be used to map the distribution of mRNA to individual cells as well as subcellular locations. Data obtained using this method provide important insights into various aspects of biology, including embryology, oncology, or immunology. The functioning and mutual interaction of individual cells cannot be fully explained without knowledge of their exact location in the tissue. Due to the novelty of the method, reconciling the obtained information on gene expression and spatial arrangement of cells is currently a major challenge and bioinformatics approaches are still being established. The aim of this work is to map the current algorithms for the normalisation of spatially resolved transcriptomics data and to compare these algorithms based on available data sets. Eventually, selected algorithms will be implemented and integrated into the workflow used at IMG CAS. The work includes i. survey of available solutions, ii. selection of a suitable solution or design of a new one, iii. implementation of the solution and its testing on available data.

Employing the method of oral history, the author has interviewed narrators who had a proactive relationship to the cultural events in the city. Their testimonies were used as a basis for selecting topics which illustrate the cultural movement in the late 1960s as a period of liberalisation ending with normalisation which suppressed the cultural development of the city; the author especially invokes those events which were irreconcilable with the subsequent political developments in the country. The paper also refers to other resources which outline the atmosphere of the era, namely resources provided by the political authorities of the city and the Tábor City Chronicle.
